Senior Revue - UPDATED!

Aloha kakou!

Although I *am* confident you could dance anything we've learned in these sessions, I've decided that our lineup will change for the Revue and will be as follows:

1st half:            Hanalei Moon

2nd half:           E Hihiwai

The lineup will be the same for the matinee and the evening performances.

I have provided that information to Lisa at the Senior Center for the program, which is in the layout stage and soon to be printed!

To make up the March class I missed when I was ill, Renton Senior Center will add a ½ hour onto the three classes before the Revue: April 30^th, May 7^th & May 14^th.

This will give us more class time to refine our hula (and our 'ukulele playing and singing!)

We will plan to reconvene at Aunty Leta's after class for the next 4 classes for lunch, sisterhood, and practice. :-)

FYI: May 14^th will be a long day: we’ll start at 9:15 at Carco for the walkthrough, back to class from 10 to noon, then over to Aunty Leta’s for lunch and last practice. Bring snacks and extra water/beverages to keep yourself hydrated and full of energy!

Our call times for dress rehearsal and performances at Carco Theatre will be as follows:

12 noon, May 15th - Dress Rehearsal

12 noon, May 16th - Matinee

6 p.m., May 17th - Evening

Senior Revue 2013!

Here are the important dates for the Revue, coming up in May.

Walk-through for placement - Tuesday, May 14th, 9:15 a.m.
Dress rehearsal - Wednesday, May 15th, 1:00 p.m.

Performances
Thursday, May 16th, 1:00 p.m.
Friday, May 17th, 7:00 p.m.

I am confident that you can dance "To Make You Love Me, Ku'uipo" and "E Hihiwai" :-)

We will work on both dances over the next 5 weeks, with additional practice when we can. Plan to gather at Aunty Leta's after class as often as possible (with Aunty Leta's blessing, of course!).

'Olelo No'eau

Oloku'i Peak (4,602 feet high)
Ka-malo qd. North Moloka'i, and fortress where Ka'ohele, a member of the royal families of Moloka'i and Maui, and a famous fast runner and jumper was caught by the Oahuans (Ka Elele Poakolu, February 9, 1881). It became a place of refuge during a battle between Maui and Moloka'i when the people of Pelekunu fled up this hill and threw stones, killing their pursuers (Ke Au Hou, September 21, 1910). Meanings of the Hawaiian word "pau"

Pau   1.  vs.   Finished, ended, through, terminated, completed, over, all done; final, finishing; entirely, completely, very much; after; all, to have all; to be completely possessed, consumed, destroyed.

Kalua pork!

If anyone wants more kalua pork, the Manuiki Foundation still has some extra pounds to sell. Let me know on March 12th, if you want to purchase some/more. :-)

'Olelo No'eau

Here are the proverbs/sayings from the past few weeks:

~ Niniu Moloka'i, poahi Lana'i.

Translation: Moloka'i revolves, Lana'i sways.
Meaning: A description of the revolving of the hips and the swaying movements in hula.

Kalua Pork Pick-Up, March 2nd

If you have ordered your Kalua Pork from me, please come to the halau on Saturday, March 2nd between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. to pick it up.

Plate lunch will be served: kalua pork, rice and mac salad for $6.00 (rumor has it that Aunty Leilani's chicken long rice might be available, too!)

(By the way, the kalua pork is definitely gluten-free!)

There will be music (and probably a bit of hula) outside for your entertainment.

Class dates for Spring

The current Advanced class began last week, February 19th, and will finish March 26th (6 weeks).

The following week, some of us will be off to the Big Island for Merrie Monarch. I've built in a rest week after that, so the next session will begin on April 16th and finish May 14th, the week of the Revue (5 weeks).

There are no plans at this point to have summer classes. Most of us are even busier in the summer months than we are now!

I'll keep you posted on when classes will recommence in the Fall.

Senior Revue at Carco Theater

Mark your calendars for Thursday, May 16th and Friday, May 17th for the Senior Revue at Carco Theater in Renton. Thursday will be the matinee show at 1 p.m.; Friday will be the evening show at 7 p.m.

Na Wahine Hula 'O Renton will be in both shows (likely before and after intermission, so at least 2 hula per show). Please let me know if you will *not* be able to dance, otherwise, I will assume you are performing!

We have time to polish our current hula before the Revue, but you might want to set aside some time during the two weeks beforehand for extra practice. More details to come closer to the dates.

Kanikapila at Kaua'i Family Restaurant

Kanikapila returns to Kaua'i Family Restaurant this Saturday, February 23rd. Aunty Manu and the Aloha Serenaders will be playing from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. 

Kauaʻi Family Restaurant serves up ono Hawaiian food and plenty of fun and community.

The restaurant is located at 6324 6th Avenue South  Seattle, WA 98108 (Georgetown area).

Asian Pacific Cultural Center New Year Celebration February 9th

Just an update for anyone who wants to come to the show.

There will be some protocol involving our Hawaiian "delegation" at this event when it begins at 11 a.m.

If you come early, there will be plenty of terrific entertainment, so consider coming before the halau goes on at 3 p.m.

Parking can be had for free about 2 blocks from the Exhibition Hall. Otherwise, parking is $10.

The event, however, is FREE!

January 29th class

Tomorrow we will take the opportunity to review na hula He U'i, Ka Uluwehi O Ke Kai, For You, To Make You Love Me, Ku'uipo and perhaps Green Carnation. We will put the finishing touches on Hanalei Moon, also.

Please bring your oli (E Ho Mai) which we will review, if we have time!

I have the four February 2nd pancake breakfast tickets for those who asked for them ($10.00 a ticket, half of which will be returned to you after the books are done!). You might want to consider putting those $$ in your costume fund :-)

February 5th class

Aunty Manu will be joining us next week!

Plan to dance To Make You Love Me, Ku'uipo and Hanalei Moon (and perhaps whatever we review on January 29th). Let me know if there is anything else you'd like to dance while Aunty is with us.

Perhaps we can impress her with our oli that day, also (and maybe even an appropriate Hawaiian language greeting!) :-D

January 15th class

Please bring your pepa with the "E Ho Mai" oli for tomorrow's class. We will be reviewing it together.

Take a look at November 19th blog post about the oli. There is a sound file there, so you can listen to the tone and rhythm.

We will also be finishing/tidying up the steps to "Hanalei Moon" with Aunty Lei's kokua.

Recap of last week's talk story

Welcome (e komo mai) to Molly to our Winter sessions. We're glad to have you with us!

This post is a recap of some of last week's in-class talk story, in case you missed anything.

Our class sessions are as follows:

6 weeks starting January 8th, ending February 12th
6 weeks starting February 19th, ending March 26th
(2 week break for Merrie Monarch Festival in Hilo - no classes April 2nd or 9th)
5 weeks starting April 16th, ending May 14th

The Carco Revue will be Thursday, May 16th and Friday, May 17th. Whoever wants to dance may dance! Practice/rehearsals will ramp up probably the first two weeks of May, since we won't have a lot of prep time in that final week of classes.

Upcoming events will be listed in a separate post.
Merrie Monarch information will also be in a separate post.

I will plan to bring CD's next class with some previous, current (and maybe new!) mele.

Merrie Monarch Ho'ike Tickets

If you are going to the Merrie Monarch Festival in Hilo and plan to go see Aunty Manu dance at the ho'ike on Wednesday, April 3rd, here's the website at which to get instructions and print out your request form.

Requests need a money order/cashier's check sent with the form. I would suggest asking for the maximum 4 tickets ($20 total) as there is a possibility that not all of us going will get tickets. Then we can share what we have. (Or if we have a surplus, sell them).

Do not send your request until tomorrow (Tuesday, January 15th) as the Festival will not accept anything postmarked before Tuesday.

Fundraiser!

Terry Ignacio of Ka Papa Maile class at Halau Hula 'O Lono has organized a "Flapjack Fundraiser" at Applebee's in Tukwila on Saturday, February 2nd from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m.

This is how it works:

Each dancer takes tickets to sell to friends and family. The tickets are $10 each, but the dancer gets to keep $5 per ticket; the other $5 goes to Applebee's.

The breakfast itself consists of two hotcakes, eggs, bacon, sausage and choice of coffee, tea, milk or orange juice.

Terry arranged this mainly to help fund her own trip to the Merrie Monarch Festival, but wanted to give everyone the opportunity to make a few bucks. Some dancers are using the money to contribute to their costume fund!

If you would like some tickets to sell, please let me know. I see Terry Tuesday nights and can pick them up for you.

(Of course, you can buy yourself a pancake breakfast, hang out with your hula sisters, then refund yourself $5.00!)
